Kappatos Athens Art Residency is pleased to invite you to the opening of the winter cycle of the first official residency programme in Athens under the auspices of the Greek Ministry of Culture, supported by a European fund (NSRF: National Strategic Reference Framework 2007 – 2013) and the first solo exhibition in Athens of the Korean Artist-in-Residence Joo Yeon Park “O” curated by Sozita Goudouna.

Joo Yeon Park’s solo exhibition “O”, with the title that refers to the Greek vowel omicron, reflects her ongoing fascination with the repetitive mechanism of words, images and sound in languages. Her reading of the classical Greek myth of Narcissus (Νάρκισσος) and Echo (Hχώ) continues to be in dialogue with her new writing, drawing, video and performative works.

However, in the exhibition “O”, her focus shifts from repetition of images and words to repetition of sound. Her request for pure voice liberated from the conventional linguistic systems of writing and sounding manifests in a form of imaginary vowels in her written-drawings and a perpetual canon of her ‘vowels’ performed by singers. Vowel, the series of written-drawings that explores a gesture of writing as a form of drawing or a gesture of drawing as a form of writing, is produced in egg tempera and ink. The works in the exhibition respond to curvilinear aspects of Greek and English vowels and the distinctive rectilinear aspects of Korean vowels, which are made up of only vertical and horizontal lines at right angles. The floor installation of the work, which incorporates steel rods and glass sheets, allows the written-drawings to be read and viewed from any direction.

The written-drawings are then proposed as scores for the three-voice performance O in the spiral staircase of the building. A round melody that singers start at different times on different floors but singing the same tune has been composed by Nikos Vittis and Nassos Sopilis for the performance. However, in this spiral stairs voice performance, due to singers’ different readings of the imaginary ‘vowels’, the musical notes will be repeated but the sound of the voices won’t be, thus escaping from the meaning of languages.

Joo Yeon Park’s works have been included in international exhibitions at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (“Your Bright Future: 12 Contemporary Artists from Korea”); ArtSonje Center (“Platform Seoul”); the 7th Gwangju Biennale (“Annual Report – A year in Exhibitions”); Rodin Gallery, Samsung Museum of Art (“One Fine Day”); and elsewhere. Her most recent solo exhibitions were at Doosan Gallery New York (“Echo of Echo I”) and Doosan Gallery Seoul (“Echo of Echo II”).

Το Kappatos Athens Art Residency και ο Γεράσιμος Καππάτος παρουσιάζουν τον τρίτο κύκλο του Προγράμματος Φιλοξενίας Καλλιτεχνών και Προσωπικοτήτων της Τέχνης στην Αθήνα στα πλαίσια του ΕΣΠΑ του Ε.Π. «Αττική» υπο την Αιγίδα των Υπουργείων Πολιτισμού της Ελλάδας και της Κορέας, και την πρώτη ατομική έκθεση στην Ελλάδα της Κορεάτισσας εικαστικού Joo Yeon Park με τίτλο “Ο” σε επιμέλεια της Σωζήτας Γκουντούνα.

Η ατομική έκθεση της Joo Yeon Park “O” αναφέρεται στo Ελληνικό φωνήεν όμικρον, και αποτυπώνει τη σταθερή προσήλωση της εικαστικού με τους επαναλαμβανόμενους μηχανισμούς των λέξεων, των εικόνων και του ήχου σε διαφορετικές γλώσσες. Η ανάγνωση του κλασικού ελληνικού μύθου “Νάρκισσος και Hχώ” συνεχίζει να βρίσκεται σε διάλογο με τα νέα κείμενα, σχέδια, βίντεο και περφόρμανς της εικαστικού. Ωστόσο, στην έκθεση “O,” η έμφαση μετατοπίζεται από την επανάληψη των εικόνων και των λέξεων στην επανάληψη του ήχου. Το αίτημά για “καθαρή” φωνή απαλλαγμένη από τα συμβατικά γλωσσικά συστήματα της γραφής και του ήχου εκδηλώνεται με τη μορφή φαντασιακών φωνηέντων στα κείμενα-σχέδια και στην αέναη εκφώνηση τους απο τραγουδιστές.

Η σειρά κειμένων – σχέδιων διερευνά τη χειρονομία της γραφής ως μια μορφή του σχεδίου, ή τη χειρονομία του σχεδίου ως μια φόρμα γραφής που παράγεται απο αυγοτέμπερα και μελάνι. Τα έργα της έκθεσης ανταποκρίνονται στις καμπυλόγραμμες πτυχές των ελληνικών και αγγλικών φωνηέντων και στις διακριτικά ευθύγραμμες πτυχές των κορεάτικων φωνηέντων, τα οποία αποτελούνται μόνο από κάθετες και οριζόντιες γραμμές σε ορθή γωνία. Η εγκατάσταση ενσωματώνει ράβδους χάλυβα και φύλλα γυαλιού ώστε οι θεατές να διαβάζουν τα κείμενα – σχέδια από οποιαδήποτε κατεύθυνση.

Τα κείμενα – σχέδια αποδίδονται σε περφόρμανς με τρείς φωνές, σε σύνθεση των μουσικών Νίκου Βίττη και Νάσου Σωπύλη, στην κυκλική σκάλα του κτιρίου. Ωστόσο, λόγω της διαφορετικής απόδοσης των “φαντασιακών φωνηέντων,” οι νότες θα επαναλαμβάνονται χωρίς τους ήχους των φωνών, αποφεύγοντας κατα αυτόν τον τρόπο το νόημα που διαχέεται απο τις γλώσσες.
