Rebecca Horn Performances 1970-75

7/5/2003 – 7/6/2003

Έργα της υπάρχουν στις σημαντικότερες διεθνείς συλλογές και έχουν παρουσιασθεί στα μεγαλύτερα Μουσεία του κόσμου όπως: The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Art Gallery of New South Wales, Australia; Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art, Torino, Italy; The Tate Gallery, London; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam and the Van AbbeMuseum, Eindhoven.

Rebecca Horn (born in Germany, 1944), is one of the greatest artists of our time. She uses many techniques to express her creativity, including performance, installations, sculpture, photography, and film. The issues addressed by the artist are perception, philosophy, communication, sexuality, eroticism. Science and alchemy, logic and understanding, mechanical and aesthetic, desire and obsession, co-exist as recurring subjects in the work she has been creating for over thirty years, her work has influenced many artists and led her to receive many prestigious awards. Rebecca Horn is considered to be one of the greatest personalities of contemporary Art.

She has participated in the Venice Biennale, the Sidney Biennale, and is one of the few artists that have presented work four times in Kassel’s Documenta. Her work can be found the most important collections and have been shown in large Museums around the world, such as: The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Art Gallery of New South Wales, Australia; Castello di Rivoli Museum of Contemporary Art, Torino, Italy; The Tate Gallery, London; San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, San Francisco; Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam and the Van AbbeMuseum, Eindhoven.

In this exhibition photographs of the Performances she did in the early 70s will be shown, as well as video and drawings. In these works, the artist examines and crosses the lines of traditional forms of art, getting the viewer involved in the creative process, emotionally and mentally. She combines sculpture with live performance, creating a feeling of mystery and familiarity between the viewer and the work, which is captivating. Her first explorations were influenced by texts by Franz Kafka and Jean Genet, as well as films by Luis Buñuel and Pier Paolo Pasolini. In 1968 she contracted a lung disease that forbid her of using certain materials in her sculptures and after a recovery period spent in a sanatorium, she started creating a series of sculptures on the topic of isolation, confinement, weakness, and the vulnerability of the human body, as well as sexuality and eroticism. She used soft materials that looked like gauze and artificial limbs to create the pieces. These are the sculptures she used to present a series of performances, live actions, with which she created a series of videos and photographs. She also became obsessed with certain objects, such as pencils, black feathers, white feathers, hammers, violins, beds, guns, paint brushes, ink, and sounds, all of which play important roles in her work.

After a short stay in London in 1971, she was invited to participate at Documenta in Kassel, where she did her first performance. That same year, she started creating mechanical-kinetic works. She also created her first film, titled “Berlin Exercises: Dreaming Under Water”, which was awarded the Critic’s Prize in 1975.

In the 1980s, Horn started working on site specific installations. In 1986, while collaborating with Yiannis Kounelis on an installation at a Viennese Hospice, she became very interested in the history and memory of the environment. She started dealing with historic sites in different places around the world, including a concentration camp in Baimar. She still creates kinetic sculptures and installations, as well as film with actors and sculptures.

She lives and works in Paris and Berlin, teaching in Berlin’s School of Fine Arts.
